Use of the SmartChem® 200 in an ACS Study on Enhanced Rock Weathering

A study published in Environmental Science & Technology (ACS, 2025) investigated the impact of Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) over 1000 days in three vineyard fields in Switzerland. The researchers monitored several soil pore water parameters to assess the chemical effects of applying basaltic rock powder.
In this study, electrical conductivity (EC) of the soil pore water was measured using a SmartChem® 200 equipped with an EC module.
What is the Purpose of Measuring Electrical Conductivity?
Electrical conductivity is commonly used to assess the total concentration of dissolved ions in soil pore water or any aqueous solution. It provides an overall indication of mineralization and helps track ionic variations that may result from natural processes or from the application of mineral amendments.
The SmartChem® 200 was therefore used for one specific analytical task within the study: generating the EC measurements reported by the authors as part of their soil pore watermonitoring.
About SmartChem® 200
SmartChem® 200 Discrete Analyzer is a fully automated wet chemistry analyzer designed for photometric and electrochemical analyses, capable of processing up to 200 tests per hour. It features optional modules for pH, conductivity, ORP analysis, and nitrate sample preparation, alongside a reagent cooling system, barcode reader, and a unique onboard nitrate cadmium reduction module with regeneration capability.

Available Configurations
The instrument is modular allowing you to configure your analyzer.
